FAQs - General
What is ThermaCare?
ThermaCare is an air-activated heat wrap using real heat that penetrates deeply to soothe and relax tight muscles. It gives 8 hours of relief while you wear it. And the long-lasting relief continues even after you take it off. Apply it right where you hurt for temporary relief of minor muscular and joint aches and pains associated with overexertion, strains, sprains and arthritis; and for minor menstrual cramp pain and associated back aches.
How does ThermaCare relieve pain and relax muscles?
ThermaCare provides long-lasting pain relief of minor muscular or joint aches and pains and menstrual cramps by delivering deep penetrating heat directly to the site of pain. ThermaCare heat blocks the transmission of pain signals, and increases blood circulation to relax your sore muscles.
How does ThermaCare keep working even after taking the HeatWrap off?
Deep heat accelerates blood flow, which helps the natural process of removing toxins from the site of pain. This provides long-lasting pain relief, even after you take it off.
What types of pain does ThermaCare help?
ThermaCare Neck, Shoulder & Wrist, and Lower Back & Hip HeatWraps are designed for relief of minor muscular and joint aches and pains associated with overexertion, strains, sprains, and arthritis as well as muscle stiffness.
ThermaCare Menstrual patches are designed to provide relief of minor menstrual pain such as abdominal cramps and any associated back pain.
ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain Hand & Wrist and Knee & Elbow HeatWraps are designed for the relief of minor muscular and joint aches and pains associated with arthritis.
What's the difference between using ThermaCare and other heat pads/hotwater bottles?
Hot water bottles, heating pads, and ThermaCare all provide heat that relieves your muscle pain. But ThermaCare provides low-level consistent heat that lasts 8 or more hours and because it’s a soft, wearable wrap, it conforms to your body and can be used anywhere, anytime. And you can expect long-lasting pain relief, even after you take it off.
What's the difference between using ThermaCare and taking Oral Pain Relievers?
Oral pain medications have to be ingested and provide relief by working through the bloodstream. ThermaCare provides pain relief by working directly at the site of the pain, allowing you to focus on things other than the pain and not to recognize pain sensation. ThermaCare also helps relieve muscular pain by relaxing the muscle and increasing local blood flow.
What’s the difference between using ThermaCare and using a topical pain reliever/cream, gel, rub or patch?
ThermaCare relieves pain without the mess or odour that can be associated with topical pain relievers such as creams, lotions, ointments, gels, or patches. Some topical pain relievers cause blood vessels to expand, which causes a heating sensation; others produce a cooling sensation that may eventually feel like heat. Drawbacks to using topical pain relievers can include stained clothing, stickiness, a burning sensation and unpleasant odours. Even medicated topicals such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory gels, creams or ointments have drawbacks including allergic reactions to the medicinal or non-medicinal ingredients, blistering of the skin, skin sensitivity and/or gastro-intestinal discomfort.
While most topical pain relievers only create an alternate sensation at the skin level, the heat from ThermaCare penetrates deeply into your muscles helping muscles to relax, and increasing local blood flow to help push out the pain. ThermaCare is odourless and stays on comfortably while conforming to your body’s natural shape, to provide long-lasting pain relief and muscle relaxation.
Don’t use ThermaCare on an area of the skin where most topical medicines such as antibiotics, pain relieving creams, hydrocortisone creams, or poison ivy creams have been applied within the past 24 hours. Doing so may cause skin irritation or may alter the effect of the topical medication. Please consult your physician if you have any further questions.
How does increasing blood flow help muscles?
One of the functions of your blood is to deliver nutrients and oxygen to parts of your body while removing cellular wastes. By increasing circulatory blood flow, the nutrients required for muscle repair and relaxation are delivered to the affected tissue. This can help your muscles begin to return to their normal state of health.
Warm or cold: what should I use for my pain?
ThermaCare HeatWraps are used for the temporary relief of minor muscular and joint aches and pains associated with overexertion, strains, sprains, and arthritis. For injuries that cause bruising or swelling, physicians and pharmacists generally recommend you periodically apply ice during the first 24-48 hours. However, after the swelling and bruising has subsided (about 48 hours after the injury), heat has been found to effectively provide pain relief. If you’re still unsure, consult your physician or pharmacist – they’ll be able to give you further advice.
I don’t suffer from pain very often; will ThermaCare still be effective for me?
There is no data that shows less frequent pain sufferers have greater or lesser pain relief than more frequent pain sufferers when using ThermaCare. Most people who suffer from occasional muscular tension, muscular/joint aches and pains, or menstrual cramps and discomfort should experience relief when using ThermaCare.
How do I know if my skin is sensitive to heat?
There are many factors that determine a person's skin sensitivity to heat. Everyone's body responds differently to heat, and the best way to measure your sensitivity is to periodically check your skin under the heat discs for signs of skin irritation or burns, especially when trying the product for the first few times.
With age, the skin becomes thinner and your circulation changes. So your skin might develop a burn at a lower temperature than it would have when you were younger. If you feel your sensitivity to heat has changed over time, check your skin frequently when using heat. Please consult your physician if you have any further questions.
What about sweating? Will perspiration affect the heat?
Average body perspiration will not affect the wrap's performance.
What sizes of ThermaCare HeatWraps are available?
All ThermaCare HeatWraps and Menstrual Patches are available in one size.
How many wraps are in a carton?
The Lower Back & Hip, Knee & Elbow and Hand & Wrist versions contain two wraps per carton. The Neck, Shoulder & Wrist and Menstrual versions contain three wraps per carton. Certain retailers also offer bonus packs that contain additional heat wraps. Larger sizes of the Lower Back & Hip and Neck, Shoulder & Wrist versions are available at selected retailers.
What is the difference between regular ThermaCare and ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain?
ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain lasts 12 hours whereas regular ThermaCare lasts 8 hours. People who suffer from arthritis/joint pain, specifically Osteoarthritis, tend to experience pain longer, and ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain was designed specifically to treat this type of pain, so the heat lasts 4 hours longer than regular ThermaCare for longer-lasting relief.
FAQs - Usage
How long should I wear a ThermaCare HeatWrap?
For best results, wear ThermaCare for the full 8 hours (12 hours for Joint & Arthritis Pain products). Using ThermaCare longer than 8 hours (12 hours for Joint & Arthritis Pain products) can increase the risk of skin irritation or burns. Use ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain for the full 12 hours. ThermaCare and ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain shouldn’t be used more than 7 days in a row; ThermaCare Menstrual shouldn’t be used more than 4 days in a row. If during or after this time, the pain you’re treating remains unchanged or worsens, consult your physician, as this may be a sign of a more serious condition.
Can I use ThermaCare while exercising?
Yes.
How do I put a ThermaCare HeatWrap on? Which side goes toward my body?
Place the darker side of the heat cells against your skin. The product may not warm up as efficiently if you put the wrong side against the skin.
Back HeatWraps:
Place the wrap against your back, centering the heat discs over the area of pain. The overhanging "flap" below the heat discs will be the bottom edge of the wrap.
Menstrual Patches:
Remove the peel paper from the adhesive and attach the Menstrual patch to the inside of your underwear over the area of pain. Use your hand to press the patch into place to make sure it sticks completely. NOTE: The adhesive may not stick well if it has been removed and re-attached to clothing several times.
Neck, Shoulder & Wrist HeatWraps:
Remove the peel paper from the adhesive tabs and place the heat discs over the pain area. Press the adhesive tabs onto your skin. NOTE: Adhesive will stick better if skin is dry and free of oils or lotions. The adhesive may not stick well if the wrap has been removed and reattached several times.
Joint & Arthritis Pain Knee & Elbow HeatWraps
Remove the peel paper from the adhesive tabs. Bend knee or elbow slightly and place opening over kneecap or elbow. Press the adhesive tabs onto your skin. Wrap straps around knee or elbow and fasten. NOTE: Do not place heat cells on the back of knee or the inside of the bend of the arm.
Joint & Arthritis Pain Hand & Wrist HeatWraps:
Place on pain area on back of hand with thumb through slit and darker discs toward skin. Wrap straps under palm of hand and fasten. NOTE: Do not place heat cells on the palm of the hand and do not overlap the heat cells.
Can I cut the HeatWrap to a different size to fit different areas of my body? I accidentally cut or tore the wrap/patch or damaged the heat discs. Can I still wear it?
No. Cutting the HeatWrap may damage the heat cells. Damaged heat cells can lead to increased risk of burning and we do not recommend using a HeatWrap that has damaged or cut heat cells. If the HeatWrap is damaged or ruptured, contain the contents and dispose of it properly. If ingested, rinse your mouth with water and call a poison control centre immediately. If the heat cell contents come in contact with your skin or eyes, rinse right away with water.
How many HeatWraps can I use at one time? Sometimes I need help in more than one area (like my wrist and my shoulder).
You can safely wear more than one ThermaCare HeatWrap, but it’s important that you don’t overlap the heat cells. Also do not wear more than one HeatWrap in the same location. We also recommend caution if you’re wearing something that presses against the heat cell area. Our safety tips advise periodically checking your skin if you’re wearing a tight fitting belt or waistband over the HeatWrap.
Can I wear ThermaCare on other parts of my body (e.g., ankle, head, etc.)?
Each HeatWrap or patch has been designed to fit comfortably while delivering 8 hours (12 hours for Joint & Arthritis Pain products) of low level heat in close contact with the skin. We made them for a specific part of the body. ThermaCare hasn't been tested for use on other body areas. We're sorry if none of our current designs fit the area you want to treat.
Can I wear a ThermaCare HeatWrap before it has fully warmed up?
Yes. Although it might give you a different perception of the heat level since the product will be gradually warming up on your body (within 30 minutes) instead of being placed there after warming up. The actual heat level should be the same with either application method.
How do I remove the adhesive on the Neck, Shoulder & Wrist or Joint & Arthritis Knee & Elbow Wrap from my skin?
Removing the Neck, Shoulder & Wrist or Joint & Arthritis Pain Knee & Elbow wrap from your skin is comparable to removing a bandage. We recommend peeling it slowly from your skin.
Can I use ThermaCare for arthritis pain?
If you have osteoarthritis, heat therapy has been found to be helpful in providing temporary relief of the minor aches and pains associated with this form of arthritis. ThermaCare provides an effective, portable source of heat when used as directed.
If you have rheumatoid arthritis (a much less common form of arthritis), you should talk with your physician before using any type of heat (including ThermaCare) to determine if heat is helpful for this condition. If you’re unsure as to which type of arthritis you have, you should talk with your physician before using ThermaCare.
You, together with your physician, may consider using ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain. It provides 12 hours of heat for all day pain relief associated with minor arthritis muscle aches and pains.
Can I attach the Menstrual patch to my skin?
The fastening adhesive on the Menstrual patch should be attached to the inside of your underwear. It wasn’t designed to be attached to the skin. For the menstrual ThermaCare to heat effectively, it should be attached to clothing so the dark sides of the heat cells are against your skin. Do not apply the adhesive to your skin, it may result in irritation. Also, the device may not work properly if applied incorrectly.
Can I use ThermaCare with oral pain relievers?
Please consult your physician.
Can I use ThermaCare with medicated rubs/creams/ointments or topical antibiotics?
No, do not use ThermaCare on an area of the skin where other topical medicines (like topical antibiotics, pain relieving creams, hydrocortisone creams, or poison ivy creams) have been applied within the past 24 hours, because it may cause injury to the skin or may alter the effect of the topical medication.
Can I use ThermaCare with creams/lotions/oils/moisturizers/aromatherapy oils?
We do not have data on the effect of wearing ThermaCare against skin where lotions, creams, moisturizers, or aromatherapy oils have been applied. These products may contain some of the same ingredients as medicated rubs, creams, and ointments, and we don’t recommend wearing ThermaCare where these products have been applied, as skin irritation may develop. In addition, lotions and oils may make it difficult for the adhesives on our products to stick to the skin.
Will ThermaCare Menstrual patches increase menstrual flow?
There is no data showing that using ThermaCare Menstrual patches will cause an increase in menstrual flow. Menstrual blood flow occurs by a different physiological process than normal local blood flow.
Can teenagers use ThermaCare for menstrual cramp relief?
Teens can wear ThermaCare for cramp relief provided they follow the label instructions. If you have additional concerns, please contact your physician.
Can I wear ThermaCare with a Medical Patch?
Do not wear a ThermaCare HeatWrap over a medicinal patch. If you are concerned about using medicinal patches (including Estrogen, Nitroglycerin, smoking cessation, weight loss, etc.), while using a heat product, please talk with your physician or pharmacist before use.
Can I use ThermaCare with blood pressure medication, heart medication, blood thinners or antibiotics?
We do not have data on the effect of using ThermaCare while taking these medications. While we do not expect you to experience problems, if you are concerned about using heat products, please talk with your physician or pharmacist. They will be able to advise you on your specific situation, and determine whether ThermaCare is right for you.
Can I use ThermaCare over scars?
As with any heating product, it is not recommended to use ThermaCare if you have any condition that causes a reduction in circulation or skin sensitivity. If you have these conditions and wish to use ThermaCare, consult your physician. Also there is an increased risk of burning if heat is applied to skin that is broken or damaged (such as a scar) or any area of the body where heat cannot be felt. Heat products also should not be used with medicated lotions, creams or ointments or on persons who cannot remove the product themselves (including young children).
Can I wear ThermaCare while going through a metal detector (such as at airport security)?
ThermaCare HeatWraps should not set off security devices that detect metals. If you are concerned about ThermaCare setting off a metal detector, we suggest you carry an open pouch with you to illustrate what ThermaCare is, and what it contains (iron) in the event that a security system does detect the HeatWrap or patch.
Can I re-use ThermaCare if I don’t wear it the full eight hours (12 hours for the Joint & Arthritis Pain product)?
ThermaCare was designed to provide heat therapy for long lasting, powerful pain relief and muscle relaxation, anytime, anywhere. But because of the technology, each wrap can be used only once.
ThermaCare works by using iron particles which, when exposed to air, start reacting. This reaction gives off heat, but once the iron is used up, it can’t be reactivated or recharged. So, after the product stops heating, it won’t reheat and should be disposed of properly.
ThermaCare should not be used in microwave ovens as the HeatWrap may catch on fire.
How and where should I store ThermaCare HeatWraps? How long can I keep ThermaCare before using it?
ThermaCare should be stored at room temperature.
We recommend keeping ThermaCare in the original carton to protect the foil pouch from being punctured or damaged. If air gets into the pouch the heating action will begin.
ThermaCare products have an expiration date shown on the packaging. This date indicates the time period during which the wraps should perform as intended. We do not recommend using the wraps after this date since they may not heat reliably.
How will I know whether or not ThermaCare has heated up to the correct temperature?
ThermaCare has warmed up when it feels warm to the touch. Use the inside of your wrist to test for warmth. Extensive testing has shown that ThermaCare and ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain heat to about 40°C (104°F) within 30 minutes and maintains this temperature for 8 and 12 hours respectively.
The HeatWrap doesn't feel like it's working. How long does it take for a ThermaCare HeatWrap to warm up?
ThermaCare HeatWraps take approximately 30 minutes to warm up once the air tight wrapper has been opened.
Why did the HeatWrap stay hot longer than 8/12 hours?
ThermaCare is designed to provide the same level of heat for 8/12 hours, but sometimes it will actually last longer and may still feel warm, but the wrap/patch will slowly cool. We recommend using the product no longer than 8/12 hours in a day. NOTE: ThermaCare HeatWraps should not be used for more than 8 hours. ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis HeatWraps should be worn no longer than 12 hours.
FAQs - Safety
Should I be concerned about being burned by the product?
ThermaCare has been thoroughly tested for safety, and most people will be able to use it without experiencing any discomfort. However, like any heating product, there is a risk of prolonged skin redness or burns for some people. ThermaCare should not be worn for more than 8 hours in one day (12 hours for Joint & Arthritis Pain products) or more than 7 days in a row (4 days for Menstrual). Check skin frequently during use. If you find irritation or a burn, remove the product immediately. Please see packaging for complete safety tips and usage instructions.
How often should I check my skin for signs of irritation or burning?
If you have sensitive skin, check every couple of hours or at any time you feel discomfort. If your skin looks or feels as if it might be burning or irritated, remove the HeatWrap. It’s normal to notice slight redness immediately after removing the HeatWrap. Always read the package insert before using the product.
How will I know if I have been burned by a ThermaCare product?
It’s normal to experience temporary skin redness immediately after removing the HeatWrap. If you experience skin irritation or discomfort while wearing ThermaCare or if the product feels too hot, discontinue use immediately. After removing the HeatWrap, if you continue to experience discomfort, burning, swelling, rash or other changes in your skin that persist where the HeatWrap was worn, consult your physician.
Can I wear ThermaCare while sleeping?
If you're under 55 years old, you can wear ThermaCare while sleeping. Products should not be worn overnight if you are over 55 years old.
Can my pet sleep on or wear ThermaCare?
We do not have any data on the effect of using ThermaCare on a pet. We do not recommend the use of ThermaCare on your pet. The iron within the heat discs poses a risk to a pet if it ingests the HeatWrap, so we recommend you keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
My pet ate part of my ThermaCare HeatWrap; what should I do?
Our packaging recommends that HeatWraps be kept out of reach of children and pets since some of the ingredients in ThermaCare can pose a health risk if the product is ingested. Please contact your veterinarian; they should be able to answer any of your concerns regarding your pet.
What can I do if I find the ThermaCare HeatWrap too hot on my skin?
ThermaCare has been designed to deliver a comfortable, well controlled level of heat that lasts at least 8 hours. Of course this does not mean that it is the right amount of heat for everybody. We apologize that the wrap feels too hot to you. You may want to try wearing ThermaCare over a thin layer of clothing instead of directly against your skin. If you still feel the level is too high, you should remove the product.
Why does ThermaCare feel hotter, especially when I sit or bend?
There are certain situations when Heat Discs might have increased contact or pressure with your skin. When this happens, the product could feel warmer to you. Prolonged exposure to these types of situations could increase your risk of skin irritation or burning. Be sure not to wear a tight fitting belt or waistband over the product or lean against the product while wearing it.
Can I use ThermaCare if I am pregnant?
You should consult with your physician if you are pregnant and experiencing pain and intend to use any pain relief products, including ThermaCare. Your physician will be able to advise you on your specific circumstance, and determine whether ThermaCare is right for you at this time.
Can I use ThermaCare if I am nursing?
We do not expect you to experience problems. However, because infant skin is delicate, we suggest you take care not to lay the baby directly on the HeatWrap. But if you are concerned about using heat products while nursing, please talk with your physician.
Why do I need to ask my physician before use if I’m diabetic?
Diabetes is a complicated disease that sometimes causes poor blood circulation and decreased skin sensitivity and feeling. Since some diabetics may be more susceptible to skin irritation, skin injury or even burns than others, they should first consult with their physician to determine if ThermaCare is right for them.
Can young children wear ThermaCare?
We do not recommend the use of ThermaCare for anyone, including children under 12 years of age, who may not be able to remove the HeatWrap on their own if they feel discomfort.
Why can't I use ThermaCare on areas with bruising or swelling?
Heat may aggravate the injury if used on areas of swelling or bruising. Physicians and pharmacists generally recommend using ice periodically in the first 24-48 hrs for injuries that can cause bruising or swelling. However, after 48 hours, heat such as that provided by ThermaCare, has been found to effectively provide pain relief. Consult your physician or pharmacist for more information.
FAQs - Product Components
What if the adhesive won’t stick/reattach?
ThermaCare HeatWraps have been designed to stay in place through normal daily activities. Most people won’t have to worry about them coming off. The conditions that can cause adhesive failure are physical activities, perspiration and oils or lotions that have been applied to the skin where ThermaCare will be worn. Skin oils can also affect ThermaCare’s ability to stay in place. We’ve found it’s best to apply the product to skin that is dry and free of oils and lotions.
What do I do if the adhesive is difficult to remove?
If you feel that the adhesive is too difficult to remove from your skin without causing irritation, you might try using mineral oil or baby oil on a cotton ball or swab to help loosen the attachment. Just continue dabbing the oil under the edge where the product is attached and gently work the adhesive away from the skin. If you use oil to remove the product, you will not be able to reattach it. KNEE: Try using the wrap without the adhesive, it might not stay in place as well, but it should still work. (The Knee Wrap has both a mechanical fastener AND adhesive).
What if the Menstrual Patch fastening adhesive won’t come off clothing?
The adhesive used on our Menstrual ThermaCare sticks to most fabrics to hold the product in place but will
come off when you need to remove it. It sticks especially well to some materials, like satin, and it’s possible
that the adhesive may separate from the Menstrual patch and stick to your clothing when you take it off. If
that happens, peel it from your clothes with your fingers. Cotton and cotton blend fabrics work best with
the ThermaCare Menstrual product.
What are the heat discs in ThermaCare? How do they work?
The heat cells are the part of ThermaCare that provide warmth. These cells contain a mixture of ingredients (activated carbon, iron powder, sodium chloride, sodium thiosulfate, sodium polyacrolate and water), which react with the air to provide low-level heat. The chemical reaction is called iron oxidation, which occurs naturally in the environment.
What materials are ThermaCare HeatWraps made of and what holds the HeatWrap together?
ThermaCare HeatWraps are made from soft cloth-like synthetic materials. The layers of the product are held together with a specially formulated construction adhesive designed to stand up to normal use.
What is the temperature of ThermaCare HeatWraps after they have heated up? How hot does it get?
Each heat disc is designed to heat to about 40°C (104°F) for 8 hours (12 hours for Joint & Arthritis Pain products). This temperature is just above your body's normal core temperature of 37°C (98.6°F).
What are the functions of the ingredients in the heat discs?
- Iron reacts with oxygen in the air to provide heat in a process called iron oxidation.
- Sodium chloride (salt) speeds up the rate of reaction between iron and oxygen.
- Sodium thiosulfate controls hydrogen generation.
- Water is also necessary for the iron oxidation reaction.
- Charcoal allows the iron powder to have a surface to react inside the heat discs. The surface of this charcoal has been treated (“activated”) to have special properties.
- Sodium polyacrylate controls the level of water present in the heat cell.
If these HeatWraps are air-activated, how do you package them without exposing them to air?
ThermaCare wraps begin to activate before they’re put in the foil pouch. Once the pouch is sealed and the air inside the pouch has been used up, the wrap stops heating. Even though they’re exposed to the air for a very short time, this does not affect performance. ThermaCare lasts 8 hours, while ThermaCare Joint & Arthritis Pain lasts 12 hours.
Why are the HeatWraps disposable? Why can I only use the wrap once?
ThermaCare was designed to provide heat therapy for long-lasting powerful pain relief and muscle relaxation. It can be combined with a return to normal activities as recommended by current therapeutic guidelines. Because it's designed to be used anytime, anywhere, it wasn't possible to make it reusable.
ThermaCare works by using iron particles which, when exposed to air, will start reacting. This reaction gives off heat. Once the iron is used up it cannot be reactivated or recharged. So once the product stops heating it should be thrown away.
How do I dispose of a ThermaCare HeatWrap?
ThermaCare can be disposed of in your regular trash. To be safe, dispose of it 8 or 12 hours after it is out of the primary foil package. Care should be taken to keep ThermaCare out of the reach of children and animals.
Is ThermaCare recyclable?
No, ThermaCare HeatWraps are not recyclable. Recyclable products, like paper, plastic and glass, fall into a single material category. ThermaCare is made from several different materials, which means recyclers won’t accept them.
Is ThermaCare biodegradable?
No, ThermaCare is not biodegradable. To reduce waste as much as possible, ThermaCare designs are thin and lightweight.
Most landfills, in an attempt to prevent the release of gases and to prevent ground water contamination, actually are designed to limit biodegradation.
Is ThermaCare compostable?
No, ThermaCare isn’t compostable and should be disposed of in your regular trash.
Can I flush the Menstrual patch down the toilet?
No, the Menstrual patch cannot be flushed down the toilet. You can dispose of ThermaCare in your regular trash, or in women’s public restrooms using the disposal system designed to hold feminine hygiene napkins or tampons.
Can I re-heat/re-charge my ThermaCare HeatWrap or patch after it stops working?
No. Any attempt to re-heat the product can result in a fire.
Can I wash the wrap?
Do not wash or moisten a ThermaCare HeatWrap or patch because it will deactivate the heat discs. While excessive moisture or wetness will affect the ability of the heat discs to heat efficiently, average body perspiration will not affect its performance.
